Chapter 5 (Society & Inequality)
Society and inequality were an important part of our history. In Eurasia and North Africa is what chapter 5 emphasized society about. The chapter talked about four topics. They were Society and State in China, Class and Caste in India, Slavery in the Roman Empire, and lastly, comparing Patriarchies.
For Society and State in China it talked about the elite and the officials, the landlord class, and the peasants. For class and Caste in India, the book explained the caste as varna, the caste as jati, and the functions of the caste. The next thing in the chapter was about slavery in the roman empire. It talked about the making of Roman Slavery. This part was what interested me the most. I thought about how much slavery played a big part in the mediterranean or western world. The cool thing was that slavery was also practiced in chinese, indian, and persian civilizations. Slavery is something that has hurt many people and I am glad we as humans have gone past that level of thinking. I am also grateful there is no slavery going on today. Well, at least not as big as it was back in the day.
